Cheeks of Fire
Warm Weather & Hot Competition at Series Finale!

Chilly Cheeks were wonderfully absent from the final event in the 2007-2008 Chilly Cheeks Winter Duathlon Series. Instead, 200 participants were greeted with dry roads, abundant sunshine, and temperatures in the 50's. Far different than the cold, snow-covered courses that challenged them in the first two series events.

The Chilly Cheeks series is composed of three races - one each month December through February - each with a different format. The February event started with a 10.8 mile paved bike ride, and concluded with a 4 mile run on a mix of paved bike paths and roads, and 2 miles of dirt trail. With the race starting on the bike, twenty-two randomly seeded starting waves went off at 1-minute intervals to prevent packs from forming on the course. More Fun in the Snow at Chilly Cheeks #2

Course conditions for the 2nd event in the 2007-2008 Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series couldn't have been better on the morning of January 18th. Dry roads for cycling, mostly snow-free running routes... what more could you ask for in mid-January!

But, alas, the race was scheduled for the 19th.

During the night, 4 inches of snow fell on the course. Sure, a dozen-or-so cars had made tracks in the fresh powder, but that only churned the snow up at Denver's Cherry Creek State Park, making it that much harder to ride a bike. Park officials rarely plow the park roads, preferring to let the sun do the job, and race-morning was no different. Click Headline for the Rest of the Story and Complete Results.

Dillard Slips Past Paradis
On An Icy Chilly Cheeks Course

The pre-race forecast called for several inches of snow to fall overnight. Well, that didn't happen, but the roads and paved bike path were coated in a layer of black ice during the pre-dawn course set-up.

Hopes were high that when daylight finally broke, the black ice would melt away - or at the very least be visible to the runners and cyclists competing in the first event of the 2007-08 Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series.

Instead, a light snow started to fall at 7:30 a.m. and by 8:00 had done a great job of hiding the black ice from view. For the first time in 16 Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series events, the bike portion of the race was declared optional - but that didn't stop the majority of race participants from riding anyway!

Harvest Moon Triathlon & Duathlon
Adds AquaBike in 2008!

After input from many triathletes who would like to participate in a half-iron distance event, but just can't handle a 13.1 mile run, we have decided to add an AquaBike division to the Harvest Moon Long Course Triathlon & Duathlon in 2008.

The Harvest Moon Aquabike will take athletes on a 1.2 mile swim and a 56 mile bike - the same course as the Harvest Moon triathletes, but will substitute a short 200 meter run in place of the half-marathon that the triathletes will perform.

Registration for the Harvest Moon Triathlon, Duathlon, and AquaBike is limited to a combined 500 entrants. Registration opens on January 1st. This event sold out in 2007, so early registration is strongly encouraged.

Win A Pair of Zipp Race Wheels
With Racing Underground in 2008

Zipp race wheels are considered by many to be the fastest wheels on the planet - and they are partnering with Racing Underground again in 2008 to award two lucky participants with a pair of these wheels, just for entering.

First on the block is a pair of Zipp 606 Race Wheels valued at approximately $2,000. The 606 wheels combine the lightness and aerodynamics of a 404 front wheel with the superior aerodynamics of an 808 rear wheel. These will be awarded by random drawing during the home cooked breakfast immediately following our Cabbage Head Duathlon. All you need to do is enter all three races in the 2008 Mile High Duathlon Series, and you will be entered into the drawing. You must be present at the drawing to win.

Next, we have a pair of super-fast Zipp 808 Wheels, also valued at approximately $2,000. Past Barkin' Dog Duathlon, and Harvest Moon Triathlon champion Cameron Widoff rode a pair of 808's to a stellar 5th place overall finish at the 2005 Hawaii Ironman. Now you can own a pair for yourself. Simply enter the Harvest Moon Long Course Triathlon, and you will be entered into the drawing. We will conduct the drawing during the post-race Bar-B-Que following the Harvest Moon Tri. You must be present at the drawing to win.

Mt. Evans Ascent Named
Most Scenic Race in 2007

We are pleased to announce that the readers of Colorado Runner Magazine have voted the Mt. Evans Ascent as the most scenic race in Colorado for 2007. The Mt. Evans Ascent is the highest road race in the world, climbing 14.5 miles up the Mt. Evans Highway - the highest paved auto road in North America - finishing at 14,264 feet in elevation.

Registration for the June 21, 2008 event, which sold-out in 2007, opens on January 1st. For more information on the Mt. Evans Ascent, please Click Here!

VanZanten, Holmberg Crowned USACFRF
National Champions

The 2007 Harvest Moon Long course Triathlon served as the USACFRF National Championship for Clydesdale and Athena triathletes, offering a $1,000 prize purse to be split among the top-3 male finishers in weight classes over 190 pounds and female triathletes in weight classes over 150 pounds.

David VanZanten, 43, of Las Vegas, Nevada claimed the overall Clydesdale title with a time of 5:07:29. In the Athena competition, 29-year-old Boulder, Colorado triathlete Molly Holmberg used a stellar run to overtake Erika Binger of Minneapolis and post a winning time of 5:25:34.

Awards were presented to the top-3 overall Clydesdale and Athena finishers, as well as the top-3 in various age and weight classes.

Lovato & Zyemtsev win a
Hot Harvest Moon

The debut of a new Harvest Moon bike course and two first-time race winners highlighted the 8th running of the Harvest Moon Long Course Triathlon & Duathlon.

Amanda Lovato, making her first appearance here since placing third in 2001, took the women's title with a time of 4:34:44. On the men's side, Viktor Zyemtsev claimed the win using the fastest run of the day to break away from Michael Hagen. Zyemtsev crossed the finish line in 4:06:48.

The new bike course and the unseasonably warm temperatures were the talk of the day, however. With a mid-September race date, temperatures in the low-90's were not expected. Especially by those who were here a year earlier, when the temperature at the start was several ticks below 40 degrees.

For the final finishers, the day was topped off with a crazy storm which blew in with such fury that it forced the cancellation of the awards presentation which was only half-way through. Fifty mile per hour winds, a drenching downpour, lightning, and hail had rescue crews scrambling onto the run course in all available vehicles to offer rides to any participants who wanted to drop out.

Inaugural Crescent Moon Tri
Faces Last-Minute Obstacles

The debut edition of the Crescent Moon Sprint Triathlon was nearly called off when a bridge demolition project shortly into the bike course was initiated just 6 days before the race. The unannounced bridge project meant no two-way bike traffic could cross the narrow lane that was left open for local auto traffic.

Fortunately, a last-minute plea to the staff at the Aurora Reservoir allowed the entire race to be held within reservoir property, providing a challenging 2-lap bike course with 5 turn-around points and 20 kilometers of rolling hills.

The change was great for spectators who enjoyed first seeing the Harvest Moon Long-Course Triathlon competitors finish the swim and head out on their 56 mile bike ride, and then got to catch all of the action of the sprint tri, which now included seeing their favorite athletes midway through the bike course!

Matt Tomlin (1:15:29) and Natalie Ryan (1:22:44) took home the $150 prize awarded to overall winners, with Peter Alfino (1:16:42) and Kim Grant (1:23:02) taking home the $100 prize awarded to the top masters finishers.

The first-year race was much more popular than anyone anticipated, selling out months before race-day. In 2008, the event will move to its own weekend to accommodate more participants.

Rocky Trails at the
Indian Peaks Off-Road Triathlon

By Kristen McFarland courtesy of Colorado Triathlete Magazine - The Nederland/Eldora area finally got its own triathlon today as Darrin Eisman and his Racing Underground crew put on the first Indian Peaks Off-Road Triathlon at the Eldora ski area. Not since Danelle Ballengee hosted the Evergreen Triathlon back in the mid-nineties has there been an alpine race quite like this in Colorado.

With the water in Peterson Lake a brisk 62 degrees (surface temperature anyway), the race started time trial style as participants headed off every 5 to 10 seconds. Most of the racers had their shoes waiting in a small staging area at the end of the 750 meter swim because there was a challenging uphill 600-meter trail dash to the transition area. The mountain bike course covered 17.5 kilometers and started up the open ski slopes before winding into the woods and becoming single track. A 5K trail run topped it off.

Perennially competitive, Boulder triathlete Ryan Ignatz took the win with a total time of 1:28:19. Ignatz was on the national champion CU triathlon team for years and coached it for two. Last year he was 9th at the Xterra World Championships on Maui. He is preparing for this year's nationals in Lake Tahoe ahead of a return to worlds. "The bike was really bumpy and really hard," he said after finishing. "Lots of rocks. Lots of turning. Lots of not knowing where you are."

Record Field & New Men's Course Record
At The Barkin' Dog

Joshua Merrick set a new course record and Sunny Gilbert repeated as women's champion, leading a record field in the 9th annual Barkin' Dog Duathlon held Saturday May 12th at Cherry Creek State Park in Denver.

Perfect weather conditions brought the crowds in the traditional season-opener for Colorado multisport athletes. For the first time in the event's 9 year history, it filled to it's 500 participant capacity during the week before the event. Fortunately, 50 additional spots were added at the last minute, so no one was turned away.

Merrick came onto the duathlon scene 2 years ago, with blazing fast run times, but less than impressive bike performances that left him shy of the podium. With 2 years of work, however, Merrick's bike splits are now solid making him a legitimate elite competitor.

Dillard, Keil Win
Final Chilly Cheeks of Season

While an unexpected snow squall along the Front Range on Friday night scared away more than 60 pre-registered participants, the 130 who showed up to play on race day were not disappointed. Beautiful sunny skies, a dry snow-free bike course, and a surprise men's overall winner made the final event in the 2006/07 Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series one of the best, yet.

Even while the Weather Channel website was forecasting a ZERO PERCENT CHANCE OF SNOW on Friday night, the snow was falling hard around the Denver Metro area, and especially in its western suburbs. Boulder and Golden each received 3 inches of the zero percent stuff!

Amazingly, Cherry Creek State Park was spared any measurable snowfall, and the bike course was completely dry and snow-free on race morning. Click Headline for the Rest of the Story and Results.

Snowy Conditions for
Chilly Cheeks #2

More than 100 duathletes chose to brave the mildly snowy conditions and compete in the second event in the 2006/07 Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series.

OK, it was more than mildly snowy. Anyone who has tried to maintain a decent workout schedule in Colorado this winter knows that the Denver area has been getting pounded with weekly snowstorms since a week after the first race in the series.

The December race saw a sunny day with a race temperaure in the 50's and dry pavement and trails for virtually the entire course. By contrast, Race #2 met runners with snow conditions that varied from relatively hard-packed snow to knee-deep powder. Click Headline for the Rest of the Story, Results, and a few Photos!

Racing Underground Introduces
Chip Timing in 2007

In our ongoing effort to provide a quality racing experience for our participants, we have recently purchased a state of the art AMB chip timing system which will be used at all spring, summer and fall Racing Underground events, as well as at select winter events. This new chip system will allow us to post complete updated results with all splits during our events!

AMB timing systems are the only chip timing systems to have been used at the Olympic Games, including the 2004 Olympic Marathon and Triathlon. They have been used at the UCI World Cycling Championships since 1993, and in recent years to time all stages of the Tour de France.

AMB is continually improving upon their transponder technology, and we are fortunate to be one of a select number of organizations worldwide who have received the all new AMB ChipX system - their most advanced timing system to date!

We are excited to be able to incorporate world class chip timing into our events this season, and will also be expanding the line-up of events that we provide with timing and race support. Race organizers desiring more information on our timing and event services can just Click Here.

If you are an athlete interested in purchasing your own personal transponder, just CLICK HERE to order one today!

Guerra Rockets the Run
Keil Dominates Women's Race
At Chilly Cheeks #1

It felt more like spring than mid-December at the first event in the 2006/07 Chilly Cheeks Winter Duathlon Series. Multisport athletes eager to test their fitness after several months away from competition were met by 200 other eager athletes at the largest event yet in this 4-year old winter series.

Three-time Olympian and 2-time Boston Marathon runner-up Silvio Guerra charged into the lead on the opening 4-mile run, establishing a gap of nearly a minute over second place in the first mile.

Guerra backed off on the 4:38 pace during the rolling trail portion of the run, before turning it back on again in the final mile to enter transition jut under the 20 minute mark for the 4-mile run. Click Headline for the Rest of the Story and Results
