2003 Mile-High Duathlon Series champions John Phillips and Jennifer Lee continued their winning ways with convincing wins at the first race in the Chilly Cheeks winter duathlon series held at Denver's Cherry Creek State Park. Each of the three events in the Chilly Cheeks series features approximately 4 miles of running and 10 miles of cycling, with a different format at each event.
The weather for Sunday's race was near perfect, with temperatures in the low 40's at the start, and the sun beaming down at the finish. Many of the racers, in fact, went out for another spin around the bike course after the race!
John Phillips is usually kown for scorching the competition on the bike - but he made his break in Chilly Cheeks Duathlon #1 on the opening run. The 4-mile run course followed a mix of paved roadways and dirt trails through Cherry Creek State Park in Denver, and Phillips was alone and out front almost from the gun.
Coming into transition with a nearly 2-minute lead, Phillips did not back off on the bike as he extended his lead by another 5 minutes on the 10.8 mile paved bike route to take the win in 49:43. Scott Bainbridge, of Englewood, took second place in 56:27, followed by Woody Noleen in 56:48.
Ed Oliver, of Littleton, coming in 8th overall in 59:29 was the first finisher in the new "Fat Tire" division which requires riders to complete the race on a Mountain Bike.
In women's competition, Jennifer Lee, of Ft. Collins, claimed 12th place overall in 1:00:17 to take the series lead, with Lyn Franklin and Laurie Edwards just a few minutes back. Jody Jacobson, of Lafayette, was the first "Fat-Tire" women's finiher with a time of 1:25:25.
The Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series continues on January 25th with a unique race that features a 1.5 mile run, a 4 mile bike, a 2.5 mile run, and a 6 mile bike! Enter by January 11th and pay just $20.
