February 11, 2001 - Eldora Mountain Resort - Nederland, CO - In snowshoe racing, where it seems that the majority of top the racers are in their 30's and 40's, there is one question that is often asked. "Where are all the young guys?"
Well, seventeen year old Travis Macy answered that question as he trounced the field in the inaugural Screamin' Snowman Snowshoe Race.
Macy, a high school runner from Evergreen, put over a minute between himself and all other challengers in the 10K event to claim the victory in 52:08. In second, Boulder's John Ortega upheld the honor of the 30-somethings with a time of 53:23, while Charlie Nullteman out sprinted Chris Valenti for third, with both runners crossing the line in 54:11.
The Screamin' Snowman was the first major snowshoe race to be held at the Eldora Ski Area, just west of Boulder -- and the easy drive produced one of the largest snowshoe races in Colorado. Nearly 200 snowshoers competed in either the 5K race, the 10K race, or the 1 mile fun-walk -- many of them first-timers who took advantage of the 120 pair of free demo snowshoes provided by Alchemy, Atlas, Red Feather, and Tubbs.
It was certainly no surprise to anyone that the Eldora course was very hilly. In fact, Eldora has gained a reputation for the hilly terrain of it's world class nordic center. After a demanding uphill start alongside the kid's ski slope, the race proceeded onto a challenging mix of single track trails and through mile long stretches of lightly tracked powder.
"The powder sections were tricky," said women's 10K winner Danelle Ballengee following the race. The world's winningest female snowshoe racer took advantage of those technical sections to put a gap between herself and pro triathlete and XTERRA World Champion, Kirsten Weule.
Ballengee carried that lead to the finish line where she took 8th place overall in 58:13, while Weule made her snowshoe racing debut an impressive one taking 2nd place in 59:46. Women's 3rd place went to Lisa Been of Team Atlas in 1:02:51.
In the 5K competition, top master's runner Catriona Dowling, who competes for the Alchemy snowshoe team, duked it out with the lead men to take 6th place overall and first for the women in a time of 36:12.
Second place among the women was a hard fought battle as four racers crossed the line within 25 seconds! At the tape, it was Pilar Ingargiola in 39:11, Julie Szmyd in 39:29, Carrie Markle in 39:35 and Kristen Mainella in 39:36.
For the men, Larry Lucero took the first place spot in a time of 30:53, with former CU Triathlon coach Neal Henderson taking second and Jonathan Modine third in 33:53.
And while all of these racers did a fine job, it was a group of four shirtless finishers from the CU Triathlon Team who drew the most applause as they crossed the finish line together!
